What is primary reason for attachments in this world?

Today we are attached to our family and loved ones, our possessions and our title. Buddha said that Attachment is the root cause of all sufferings. So why it seems so hard to let go of attachments? For this we need to delve into the cause of attachments in this world.

If we all see the root cause of our suffering today, it is indeed attachment. We feel sad, anxious, fearful and worried for those we are attached to, be it our family and loved ones. We feel unhappy when they are unhappy or when something is not working in their lives. We are fearful of losing all that we are attached to be it our title, role, material possessions both tangible and intangible. Indeed because of attachment we experience pleasure too when good happens with people we love and whatever we identify ourselves with. In this cycle of pain and pleasure we get “affected” and this blocks our Anahata chakra or heart chakra which is the seat of God.

More on Anahata

What is primary reason for attachments in this world? This is a 12 petal chakra of green colour located in the centre of chest at the end of sternum. It is here we experience feelings of pure bliss and Ananda when it opens with the light of Truth. Until we get aligned to our true nature which is amply written about in the scriptures and told in many ways by saints and rishis and men of wisdom over the years in different ways, this chakra remains blocked. A blocked chakra makes the person run here and there in the external world searching for true happiness like a musk deer running after the fragrant smell which was actually within itself.

Reason of Attachment

A person gets attached because he associates himself with the Role play. So when you associate yourself as a parent, you get attached to your children. When you associate yourself as a business owner, you get attachment to the title, your employees, clients etc. As a man you get attached to a lover, as a friend to a companion, as a musician to your music, as a pet owner to your dog etc. Due to this identification, you make a reference and eventually go in illusion and lose your true self as a soul which is not the body, mind, senses or identity.

Hence attachment is the source of pleasure and pain and that stops true happiness from entering a person’s life. In spiritual journey one has to overcome this illusion of attachment to realise unconditional love as our true nature.
